Local protesters in Ceuta have destroyed a makeshift migrant camp as tensions soar in the tiny Spanish territory following last month’s major border breach. Tents and belongings were set on fire after protesters broke through a police cordon at Benitez Beach. Earlier, local residents blocked a Red Cross convoy delivering food and water to another camp. The latest unrest follows an alleged attack on a military vehicle by around 70 migrants, leaving one soldier injured. 12 Moroccans were detained in connection with the incident. Thousands of migrants are estimated to remain in Ceuta, many of them children, with political parties at odds over the exact figure. The public services of the exclave – which has a population of 84,000 – have come under significant strain. At least 72,000 people crossed into Ceuta on 30 July in a surge that left 96 migrants dead, according to authorities.
