Perched on the shores of the Firth of Forth, Blackness Castle is one of Scotland’s most fascinating fortresses. Built in the 15th century, it has served as a royal residence, a military fortress and even a state prison. Its distinctive shape stretching into the water earned it the nickname “The Ship That Never Sailed.” You might also recognise it from Outlander, Outlaw King and Mary Queen of Scots. If you’re visiting from Edinburgh, I recommend combining it with Linlithgow Palace, the birthplace of Mary, Queen of Scots. From Linlithgow, you can take the F49 bus to Blackness, which takes around 15 minutes. The service is fairly limited, with only a few buses each weekday, so it’s worth checking the timetable before you travel. 📍 Blackness Castle Save this for your Scotland itinerary and send it to someone who loves castles. 🇬🇧 #blacknesscastle #scotlandtravel #visitedinburgh #uktravel #visitscotland
